Monitoring & Targeting (M&T)

M&T is a structured approach to providing key management information for, typically, an energy management programme, but also for environmental management programmes.

The basic premise of Monitoring & Targeting (M&T) is the adage 'you cannot manage what you do not measure'. 

Interestingly, this quotation is often attributed to Lord Kelvin. In fact what he said was:

"When you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know something about it; but when you cannot measure it, when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge is of a meagre and unsatisfactory kind; it may be the beginning of knowledge, but you have scarcely in your thoughts advanced to the state of Science, whatever the matter may be."

The need to quantify is well accepted by accountants and by those working in quality control. Good data and good analysis form the bedrock of any management approach. In our view it is virtually impossible to have effective energy or environmental management without an effective information system.
